Plain Concrete

You will be familiar with this finish from regular footpaths and kerbs. Plain Concrete is a standard grey cement mixture. It is finished with a 'Stipple' creating a slightly textured finish with no aggregate (stones) showing on the surface - A smooth or polished concrete finish is not suitable for paving outdoors as it would create a slippery hazardous surface. This type of concrete is the cheapest option offered by Lorne Concreting. All concrete paving must be treated with construction joins/cuts to minimise cracking. Spacing of these joins/cuts will be site and design specific. Sealing of any paved area is highly recommended to minimise fading, staining and cracking.

Exposed Aggregate Concrete

Exposed Aggregate Concrete is a very popular and fashionable decorative finish, it is used at most display homes. The finish is not smooth, rather the aggregate (stone/pebbles) are exposed which makes it rough and gravelly. However the aggregate is quite fine making it comfortable to walk on with bare feet. Exposed Aggregate Concrete is a standard grey or off white cement mixture with a select type of customised small aggregate (stones/pebbles) and will sometimes have a colour oxide mixed through (mixed through at concrete plant). It is finished with a high pressure blast exposing the aggregate materials (stones/pebbles) on the surface. All concrete paving must be treated with construction joins/cuts to minimise cracking. Spacing of these joins/cuts will be site and design specific. Sealing of any paved area is highly recommended to minimise fading, staining and cracking.

Coloured Concrete

There are numerous ways of providing colour to concrete. One cheap alternative is to merely add colour oxide to the top layer of the plain concrete whilst it is drying, the other is to paint it once dry. This will not provide a lasting colour finish, the colour can wear off leaving unsightly patches of plain concrete showing. Once this has happened it can not be fixed. Lorne Concreting will not offer the above method as an option under any circumstances. Our Coloured Concrete is a standard grey or off white cement mixture with a colour oxide mixed through (mixed through at concrete plant). This creates a permanent colour for the life of the paving. It is finished with a 'Stipple' creating a slightly textured finish with no aggregate (stones) showing on the surface - A smooth or polished concrete finish is not suitable for paving outdoors as it would create a slippery hazardous surface. All concrete paving must be treated with construction joins/cuts to minimise cracking. Spacing of these joins/cuts will be site and design specific. Frequently Asked Questions

What factors contribute to the cost of the job?

There are numerous factors than can affect the price of concrete works, some more so than others. Factors include, but are not limited to; building site conditions, building site location, total area of concrete paving, type of concrete and finish selected, design of the driveway, slope of the building site, access to paved areas, council or estate/developer requirements, discounts and upgrades such as concrete sealing, stronger concrete or stronger reinforcements.

Will the concrete in the driveway crack?

Cracking in concrete is somewhat controlled by 'Control Joints'. These are more flexible join areas are designed to attract cracking and in turn prevent cracking to the general paved surface. A good sealant sprayed whilst the concrete is drying will significantly reduce the chance of any cracking. Due to the nature of concrete as a material and recent drought conditions, standards stipulate tolerances for concrete paving to crack. These cracks are commonly known as hairline cracks. Varying weather conditions will cause each building site's foundation to react. Those with reactive foundations (Class S, M, H, P or E) should expect hairline cracks in varying weather conditions. Do not try to repair any damaged or cracked concrete. In the event of cracks greater than 2.5mm wide, the client should contact us for a review.

How strong should the concrete be?

Standard specifications of Australian Concrete Driveway paving is; 25Mpa concrete (100mm minimum thickness), SL72 reinforcing slab mesh to all areas with 2 metre 3-L11 to any internal corner(s) to prevent cracking. Upgraded reinforcement and/or concrete strength should be considered if heavy vehicles utilise concrete area.

Will concrete fade?

Yes. However sealing of any paved area is highly recommended by Lorne Concreting to minimise fading, staining and cracking.

Does Lorne Concreting provide paths and extra concrete work?

Yes. Upon a clients request we will design and quote any areas on a site. Clients should be aware that areas with limited access will incur additional costs involved with manual handling and concrete pumping. Sometimes other paving alternatives (other than concrete) are more suitable to these limited access areas.
